Universal & Azure Team For Cloud Production

Universal Filmed Entertainment Group has reportedly set out a major multiyear strategy to move all the studios’ film and TV production from in-house servers to Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform.

The move would allow creatives to collaborate more easily and efficiently across geographic regions and with outside vendors. Michael Wise, CTO of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group says: “It will unlock a new way to make movies in a way we haven’t been able to do before.”

Universal and an Azure team are working to extend DreamWorks Animation’s proprietary production platform for animation to include live-action content which will ultimately be housed in the cloud.

While this was going to be the way things were headed eventually, the pandemic has proven an accelerant in this case and this solution should allow for a quicker return to industry production – letting production teams work with a broad array of industry partners remotely.

One big winner in this is visual effects. Dozens of third-party partners are often involved in computer effects on major films, this movie will like save plenty of time on that front.
