Warner Bros. Pictures day-and-date theatrical release of “Tom & Jerry” both in cinemas and on HBO Max has been a solid success. The movie opened to $4 million on Friday and an expected $12.5 million over the three-day weekend.
That beats the Thanksgiving weekend opening of “The Croods: New Age” with $9.7 million for the three day to become the second-best debut for a film released during the pandemic since August (behind only “Wonder Woman 1984” with $16.4 million). It also pulled in a strong A- CinemaScore.
The numbers come as roughly 50% of all U.S. theaters are still closed, as well as No. 2 chain Regal. Things are picking up though as New York City is set to open this coming Friday while Los Angeles is expected to reopen within the next month.
