The 2019 American Music Awards were jam-packed with incredible, star-studded performances, but Taylor Swift’s hit-filled performance was arguably the most-anticipated moment of the night — and did not disappoint.
But before Swift graced the stage, the legendary Carole King entered to introduce her as the coveted Artist of the Decade. King commended Swift for her lyrical strength and the relability within her music before predicting, “The best is yet to come.
” From there, a highlight reel played that captured Swift’s ever-growing relationship with her fans throughout the years, as well as a few of her many accolades — including being crowned as the youngest Billboard Woman of the Year and the only artist to receive it twice.
Then, it was finally time for the performance to begin. It included fan-favorite hits throughout her career, starting with Lover’s “The Man.” Swift, wearing a button-down white shirt decorated with all of her album titles, danced along with a group of kids as she performed the feminist anthem.
She soon revealed a gold sparkling leotard as she transitioned into throwbacks like “Love Story,” an edgy rendition of “I Knew You Were Trouble” that revved up its dubstep inspiration and “Blank Space” with a troupe of suited male dancers.
But Swift didn’t want to celebrate her achievements all by herself: she called upon friends Camila Cabello and Halsey for a bubbly performance of “Shake It Off.” At one point, she cheekily blew kiss to camera as the stage came alive with bright lights.
The medley climaxed with the title track of August’s Lover album, where Swift channeled her inner Elton John. Sporting a bubblegum-pink cape adorned with gold detailing, she crooned the romantic tune while playing piano as a pair of ballet dancers sauntered in front of her.
As the performance ended, Swift appeared filled with glee while fans loudly chanted “Taylor” and her parents proudly looked on with awe. She ended it all by shouting out her loyals fans in her speech: “Thank you for being the reason I’m on this stage…I’m so lucky to get to do this.”
