Smart Travel Packing Tips

Wherever you’re headed this summer, bring along these tips and tricks for jet-setting in style

Create a formula of interchangeable separates that can be easily mixed and matched, in a palette of colors that work well together. Choose neutrals first (since they’re the most versatile), then throw in a hit of color.

Opt for shoes in metallic gold or silver: They’re perfect for day or evening and look good with just about everything.

To avoid overpacking, try the following guideline for a weeklong trip: five tops, four bottoms, three dresses, three pairs of shoes, two swimsuits, two handbags, one hat, one statement accessory, one pair of sunglasses.

Espadrilles are ideal travel companions. They’re comfortable enough for running through the airport or climbing the Spanish Steps.

Bring a few no-fail gauzy scarves that will let you look pulled together in a hurry. Wear one as a wrap on chilly nights or as a makeshift cover-up by the pool, or knot it around your neck to update a basic sundress.

Always plan ahead! I lay out my clothes four days in advance, starting with a wish list of too much and eliminating a few pieces daily. I create outfits for every activity (each piece should be compatible with at least three others) and snap pictures on my phone. That way, when I pack the night before, I’m good to go.

Roll your clothes (rather than fold) to fit more in a carry-on.

Store undergarments in jumbo ziplock bags for easy visibility—they double as laundry bags on the way home.
