The Definition
Sciatic nerve pain is usually the term used to describe pain in the back. This pain usually begins from your lower back and progresses to your leg passing through you buttocks.
The reason why it follows this particular route is due to the fact that this is where the sciatic nerve lies in the body. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body and the grief it causes is commensurate with the fact that it is the longest nerve.
So what causes this pain to occur in the first place?
The Cause
A prolapsed disc, or slipped disc, or herniated disc, or bulled disc, as the case may be, is one of the most common causes of this condition. Other causes include, but are not limited to the following; a pinched sciatic nerve, arthritis, injury to the back from an automobile accident or so, spinal stenosis, and an acquired poor posture when you walk, stand, sit, or lie down.
So, can this condition be cured and if so, how?
The Cure
In a few of the cases of back pain, or sciatica, the pain will subside with time and heal within 6 weeks to about 3 months. Please note that this is not the case with everybody’s condition. Also, the pain will mostly reoccur within a year in such cases.
While talking about cures, it won’t be a bad thing to add the don’ts too. Bed rest is good for relieving the pain in your back, but do not stay in bed for longer than 24 hours as this will weaken your muscles and aggravate your condition further.
Instead of a protracted bed rest, you should engage in light to medium low impact exercises like swimming, aerobics, stretching, yoga, tai chi, and some strengthening exercise routines.
In fact, from the above, performing the stretching and strengthening exercise routines cannot be overemphasized if you really want to get better. It is an important step towards your total rehabilitation especially if your condition is really bad.
While undergoing all of these, you may need to opt for pain killers and pain relievers en-route to your cure. You can go for over the counter anti inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen, Tylenol, or Naproxen among others. Note that while these may help with the pain, it may cause you to experience certain side effects like bleeding or stomach ache.
You need to watch your weight so as not to gain weight and increase the pressure to your pinched nerve. You also need to watch your diet so as to ensure that it is balanced. You should incorporate the following foods into your diet: lean meat, fruits and fibre, vegetables, nuts, grains, fish, milk, eggs, and so on.
You should also maintain a proper posture by ensuring that you walk upright, sleep on a firm surface, stand and sit without slouching, etcetera.
FACT: Most conventional treatments for sciatica only work as a temporary band aid solution; they all fail to work in the long run!
