“Kombat,” “Slayer” Box Office… Fight!

“Mortal Kombat” and animated feature “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” are reportedly competing hard to win the box office this weekend.

Funimation’s release of ‘Slayer’, based on the anime series, pulled in $9.5 million on Friday – neck and neck with “Mortal Kombat” which grossed $9 million with both on track for openings in the $20 million range each.

“Mortal Kombat” is screening in nearly twice as many locations as “Demon Slayer,” but also boasts an R-rating which could limit its potential audience along with having a simultaneous HBO Max release. It cost an economical $55 million to produce.

“Godzilla vs. Kong” came in third with just over $1.1 million and now sits with $83.5 million domestically over its first four weeks. “Demon Slayer” has already grossed more than $400 million in Japan and shattered records over there.
