Hawley’s Standalone “Star Trek” Was To Link Back

Ahead of the fourth season premiere of FX’s “Fargo,” a feature piece on the series’ creator and showrunner Noah Hawley has touched upon his involvement with another franchise – “Star Trek”.

The franchise is thriving on television at the moment with multiple shows on the air, but its film future remains murky at best – especially with the recent trilogy of ‘Kelvin Timeline’ movies led by Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk.

At last report, Hawley had completed a script for his film which was seemingly a standalone entry not connected to the previous films and with all new characters. It also dealt with a “virus that wipes out vast parts of the known universe” which is one reason Paramount seemingly dropped development of the film it even though designers had already been hired.

Hawley himself has now teased that should the studio ever go ahead with it some day, the film will feature a direct connection to the existing films even though it starts with a whole new roster of characters. He tells Variety:

“We’re not doing Kirk and we’re not doing Picard. It’s a start from scratch that then allows us to do what we did with ‘Fargo,’ where for the first three hours you go, ‘Oh, it really has nothing to do with the movie,’ and then you find the money. So you reward the audience with a thing that they love.

What such a connection could be isn’t clear as we don’t know what era of “Star Trek” Hawley’s film unfolds in, or if it’s a part of the alternate Kelvin timeline. For now, the film portion of the “Star Trek” franchise is expected to remain on ice for some time to come.
