The newest trailer for Elden Ring features no gameplay and instead focuses entirely on the backstory of its world.

Between its gameplay trailers and the beta test, Bandai Namco and FromSoftware arguably don’t need to show off any more gameplay to drum up excitement for Elden Ring. As such, for The Game Awards 2021, they opted to release a trailer that is entirely cinematic and story focused.

Specifically, it covers Elden Ring’s backstory, describing a brief summation of the events that transpired before the start of the game. Basically, a big war known as The Shattering took place in the wake of the destruction of the titular Elden Ring.

Who broke the Elden Ring and why remains a mystery, but the war ended with only two figures left standing: General Radahn and Malenia the Severed. Although the trailer implies the two killed each other, Bandai Namco says they are still alive, and players will get to fight alongside them in the final game. Although we wouldn’t be surprised if at least one of them will also be a boss fight (our money’s on the big one).

With the world fractured and covered in darkness, your role as the Tarnished is to rebuild the Elden Ring yourself and become the new Elden Lord.

Elden Ring’s lore has always been a major selling point for the game since it was announced. This is because George R. R. Martin himself has contributed to the game. If you somehow don’t recognise the name, he’s the author of the A Song Of Ice And Fire books which served as the inspiration for Game Of Thrones.

Even without this new story trailer, however, Elden Ring has done more than enough to be a hotly anticipated game for next year. In fact, it’s now won the Most Anticipated Game award at The Game Awards two years in a row.

This year it beat out Bethesda’s Starfield and even the likes of God Of War: Ragnarök and the sequel to Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. That’s impressive work for an entirely new property, even if it is a spiritual successor to Dark Souls.

Bandai Namco has also taken the time to remind fans that Elden Ring will support the Xbox Smart Delivery service. This means you’ll get both the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S versions regardless of which one you purchase.

PlayStation owners don’t need to worry about being left out. If you buy the PlayStation 4 version, you can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version at no extra cost.

Elden Ring releases on February 25 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
