Should David De Gea or Dean Henderson be Man United’s number one this season?
Manchester United goalkeeper Lee Grant has insisted that competition between David De Gea and Dean Henderson is good for the club.
One of the biggest debates over the summer has been who should start the season as Man United number one.
De Gea was considered to be the best ‘keeper in the world a couple of seasons ago. But his form has dipped of late, with him making more and more errors.
Mbappe to Liverpool, ‘hypocrite’ Klopp and other nonsense
Henderson meanwhile has been gaining more admirers year after year, as he rose through the divisions on loan with Sheffield United.
The England youngster’s form has been rewarded with a new five-year deal. He has now returned to the club and is set to challenge De Gea for his number one jersey.
Speaking on Man Utd’s ‘keeper dilemma with MUTV, Grant said ‘it is a good problem to have’:
He added: “He [Solskjaer] has got good individuals, good characters and that’s important.
“The four or five of us all understand what it takes, we all want to support each other, but most importantly we all have a determination to be better than the next one. That’s crucial and I think that will stand us in good stead over the course of the season.
“There’s lots of games to play, so all hands on deck as it were.”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to keep faith with De Gea at the start of the new season. But Henderson will be ready to step in as he pushes to start for England at next summer’s European Championships.
Grant has been impressed by Henderson’s form in pre-season and said it is great to have him back at United:
“The goalkeeping department is no different from any other department. We’re all pulling in the right direction, striving to be fit and ready and looking forward to next weekend.
“I imagine for Dean, it gives him huge confidence in himself. That self-belief is all-important, especially at a young age. The next test for him is obviously in front of him.
“He’s now committed his future to the football club, which is wonderful news, so it’s great for the department: myself, Dean, Sergio [Romero], David, Nathan Bishop… it’s a long list.
“We all want to play and do well for the football club and that can only enhance the atmosphere in the group.”
