Getting in some good SSAT preparation is one of the fundamental keys to mastering the secondary school admissions test. An exceptional score is not the only mitigating factor in determining a pupil’s acceptance into an educational facility; extracurricular activity, teacher recommendations and volunteer work are also important and these should not be ignored.
The importance of a proper SSAT preparation course becomes apparent when you consider that the test scores reflect a student’s performance as compared to all other participants within a 3-year period. An exam score of 91% indicates that the pupil in question has performed better than 91% of the other students who have taken the exam. This scoring method is what makes the test very competitive; it is imperative to not only score high, but also to score higher than the competition.
3 Common Preparation Resources
- Tutors: This is the most common form of training and is perhaps one of the best. Having a skilled tutor to interact with provides many benefits to learning because there is a live person to answer one on one questions specific to your needs. The down side of a tutor is often the cost associated with hiring an educational professional. This is the most expensive option and is only a consideration for those that can afford it. There is also the task of ensuring you get someone who is qualified.
- SSAT Prep Books: This is the most inexpensive route to take because a good prep book costs less than $20. There are many titles published by reputable organizations every year that provide complete sample tests and they can yield very good results. There is also a prep guide available from the official site. The down side to this method is the “dryness” of the material; there is no one to interact with or to answer questions. It is up to the individual student to make sure they use and complete the material.
- Video study guide: This option is a newer alternative and is perhaps the most cost effective solution for a SSAT study guide. A full prep course with video tutorials from prominent educational individuals, complete sample tests for all sections of the exam and a lot of sound advice and insight makes this option a real deal. A video study guide is far more engaging than a book and provides some of the advantages of a tutor, but without the cost.
