Oscar nominee Jasmila Zbanic and Ali Abbasi have been hired as directors alongside Kantemir Balagov on HBO’s highly anticipated adaptation of the PlayStation video game franchise “The Last of Us”.
Balagov, who helmed the acclaimed 2019 Russian feature “Beanpole,” will helm the pilot which sets the look of the show. Subsequent episodes will be helmed by Zbanic, who directed this year’s Oscar nominee “Quo Vadis, Aida,” and Abbasi whose 2018 feature “Border” won Cannes’ Un Certain Regard award.
They join executive producers Neil Druckmann and “Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin who are writing the project.
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey star in the series which adapts the story of an older man and a young girl travelling across the post-apocalyptic United States in a struggle for survival.
Filming on the series is set to kick off in July.
