Why are Stormzy and Chip beefing? All the theories and memes

Stormzy and Chip’s beef is just one of the many things we didn’t think we’d see happen in 2020.

Chip, the artist formerly known as Chipmunk, interrupted an otherwise mundane Wednesday evening to share – and delete – a video reportedly showing Stormzy turning up to his house with a group of friends.

‘June… When you get sent a video of Stormzy & friends tryna run up on your house,’ Chip captioned the post.

In the footage, Stormzy is heard saying: ‘Telephone me, innit,’ to which Chip replies: ‘You think you can just pull up to people’s houses? No I ain’t gonna phone you, Stormzy.

‘You’re disrespectful bro, and that’s that.’

While Chip quickly removed the video, he then dropped the diss track Flowers in which he seems to mention the car park incident.

Lyrics include: ‘I know where you live too, but that is not the point of this / Pull up, catch me lackin’, plan failed, there’s no avoidin’ this.

‘Dunno what you heard about Essex but it’s calm, darg / And they ain’t used to black people screamin’ down the car parks / So let me ask you this, Mr. Road Man, ’cause you don’t get the program / It seems like you wanna lose it all.’

Chip went on to make it crystal clear who his target was by name-dropping Stormzy’s pal Ed Sheeran, spitting: ‘Stick with Ed Sheeran, he gon’ tell you ’bout Chip’s pen,’ while also mentioning a ‘fake arse activist’.

Stormzy, real name Michael Owuo Jr, is known for his charity work and recently pledged to donate £10 million to Black British causes over 10 years.

On the surface, it all appears to have come out of the blue but actually, there have been signs of tension between the rappers in recent months.

Even Wiley’s resurfaced to have his say on it all.

Waze diss

In March, Chip dropped the track Waze featuring Skepta and D-Block Europe’s Young Adz from the trio’s joint album Insomnia.

On Chip’s verse, he raps: ‘You ain’t even done 10 years in this ting / Round here we don’t hear you’re a king, man will take your throne.’

Fans are convinced it was in reference to Stormzy describing himself as a ‘king’ on his Still Disappointed diss track, which was aimed at Wiley. Another feud which we can get into another time…

Stormzy also wears a crown on the cover for his second album Heavy Is The Head.

I Dunno diss

Two months later, Stormzy teamed up with Tion Wayne and Dutchavelli for the hit track I Dunno and appeared to fire back at Chip.

‘Is he sending for me? I dunno. What them boy there sell first week? I dunno,’ Stormzy raps.

It didn’t stop there as the Vossi Bop rapper proceeded to go in on the verse, spitting: ‘When they ask for the fee let ’em know that’s it 1.5 for the headline show. Little n***a, that’s milli’s not thousands, Stormzy the goat but they really been doubtin’.

‘Came offline, I’ve been chillin’ in mountains. How about you, bro? I really sell albums. ‘Wait, look, I thought I heard shots but the shoe don’t fit. Can’t flex on me with Louboutin drip. Cah my n***a, that’s stupid s**t. We all know that I’m stupid rich.

‘Can’t stand these neeks when they talk on the tune. Cah it’s, “Wagwan bro?” when I walk in the room. That’s big Mike, the most paid, the most sold and I still get love from all of the goons, like.’

However, when the pair started trending on Twitter, Chip asked his followers: ‘Why am I trending?’

Tion Wayne also tried to play down the drama and tweeted: ‘U lot are bored.’

Is there more to Stormzy and Chip’s beef?

Random rumours are floating that Chip and Stormzy are clashing over a song feature while also speculating that Chip’s verse on Waze wasn’t even intended for Stormzy but another MC after all.

Chip told Metro.co.uk last year that he’s lost some friends along the way in his career, explaining: ‘The hardest learning curve of my career is confusing love and money. That can really unfold your life.

‘People that I thought were brothers [weren’t].’

Now for Stormzy’s response…
