There’s a new challenge on social media that includes two things we really wouldn’t think to put together: treadmill intervals and singing. And it just might bring together two musical forces we would like to see together.
It’s been called the #MileyChallenge, and it all started earlier this week when Miley Cyrus shared her nontraditional cardio-endurance prep for her Super Bowl LV pregame performance during the NFL TikTok Tailgate in Tampa this Sunday. In the first video, she’s belting out the rock song “Rebel Girl” by Bikini Kill, setting her pace to the beat of the music before hopping off the treadmill to sing a few more of her songs. It’s a cardio challenge for sure, since even getting out a few words for a (talking) conversation can be difficult once you reach a certain intensity.
In the second video, she’s back on her Peloton treadmill (walking this time) and singing her song “Plastic Hearts.”
Afterward, singer and rapper Lizzo saw Cyrus’s video and decided to try it out too, running and singing her song “Cuz I Love You” for a solid three minutes on her Peloton treadmill.
“So I saw Miley running and singing her song for stamina, so I’m gonna run and sing my song for stamina,” she says in the video. “I’m doing this for all the big girls out there; they said we couldn’t do it!”
Peloton saw the video of Lizzo’s take on Cyrus’s Super Bowl show prep, reposted it, and dubbed it the #MileyChallenge.
The ability to sing a full-length song while running shows that Lizzo’s super comfortable on the treadmill, but it’s not her only form of cardio: She also seems to be a fan of jumping rope, which is an intense, high-impact form of cardio that you can do anywhere. (Not quite sure where to start? These three jump rope workouts take the guesswork out.) And she’s not afraid to mix it up—she’s posted moves that incorporate battle ropes, dip bars, and dumbbells, along with bodyweight exercises, for strength-training sessions.
Last summer Lizzo shared on TikTok that she has been working out consistently for the last five years—the video showed her riding a stationary bike, doing bodyweight squat jumps, and jumping rope. She emphasized to fat-shamers that her fitness routine, or anyone’s fitness routine, isn’t for anyone else to judge or comment on.
Cyrus gave Lizzo’s treadmill singing video an excited approval: After seeing it, Cyrus shared in her Instagram Story that she wants to do the #MileyChallenge together. “When I’m back from super bowl,” she wrote, “we gonna try doing this shit IN MASKS!”
