Marvel Entertainment will join forces with Skydance’s New Media division for a “narrative-driven, blockbuster action-adventure game, featuring a completely original story and take on the Marvel Universe”.
What makes the news exciting is that the announcement was made by New Media’s President Amy Hennig. Hennig is the famed game director/writer who worked at Naughty Dog for years, and served as the creative director and writer on the original “Uncharted” game trilogy (the second title still considered one of the greatest games of all times).
The game will mark Skydance New Media’s first initiative and will boast a team of developers with decades of AAA experience in the action and adventure gaming worlds along with creative consultants from the worlds of film, television and comics. Hennig says in a statement:
“I can’t imagine a better partner than Marvel for our first game. The Marvel Universe epitomizes all the action, mystery and thrills of the pulp adventure genre that I adore and lends itself perfectly to an interactive experience. It’s an honor to be able to tell an original story with all the humanity, complexity, and humor that makes Marvel characters so enduring and to enable our players to embody these heroes that they love.”
Marvel’s game history has been a mixed bag over time with its most successful works of the past decade or so being their PlayStation exclusive “Spider-Man” titles which have scored big sales and critical acclaim. Square Enix’s recently released story-driven “Guardians of the Galaxy” title has scored good reviews, but the same company’s more co-op and multiplayer-oriented “Avengers” title wasn’t so well received.
Hennig joined Visceral Games in 2014 for “Project Ragtag,” a narrative-driven game set in the “Star Wars” universe that was getting raves from those working on it – but EA scrapped that incarnation of the project as it pivoted towards a focus on more live-service games.
