UK’s The National Theatre has launched ‘National Theatre at Home,’ a dedicated streaming service that will be available worldwide and launched yesterday.
Only a handful of productions are available at this point including the very first National Theater Live broadcast back in 2009 with “Phedre” starring Helen Mirren, Ruth Negga and Dominic Cooper.
Also at opening is “Othello” with Adrian Lester, “Coriolanus” with Tom Hiddleston, “Medea” with Helen McCrory, and “Amadeus” with Lucian Msamati.
New titles from the archive will be added each month, including previous National Theatre Live broadcasts and plays filmed for the NT’s Archive released online for the first time such as “Mosquitoes” with Olivia Colman which is now available.
NTL streamed filmed plays on Thursday nights over the summer on YouTube with sixteen productions resulting in 15 million views across 173 countries. The new service allows the company to claw back some many and support theaters who’ve been doing it especially tough during the pandemic.
You can subscribe monthly, annually, or individually rent shows for a one-off fee and 72-hour window (a single play comes in at about 70% of the monthly ten pound subscription fee). The platform is now available for Apple, Google, Roku TV and Amazon Fire TV services.
