Tower Bridge blocked by XR protesters with a caravan and a van

Protesters blocked Tower Bridge today as part of two weeks of action by Extinction Rebellion in London.

Photos from the scene show police lined up on the road trying to manage the demonstration.

The bridge was been blocked with a van and caravan, the Metropolitan Police said, but has since reopened.

Video from the scene showed one protester being moved on by police as she told the crowd: ‘I love getting my little escort. Look at my back-up dancers; they’re so cute’.

She shouted to others: ‘Whose future?’ as they responded ‘Our future’.

The Metropolitan Police force said on Twitter: ‘Officers were on scene almost immediately. We are working with @CityPolice to get traffic moving again.

‘Activists are also laying on the junction north of Tower Bridge, this is causing further disruption.’

Extinction Rebellion tweeted: ‘Rebels have taken TOWER BRIDGE, and the junction North of there, Mansell St! Tea party is off to a joyous start, with beautiful pink things, come and join us’.

They described it as ‘another Towering achievement as the world’s most famous bridge is BLOCKED’.

Some 11 activists were arrested during action on Bank Holiday Monday today.

It brings the total number of people arrested since the action began to 367.

Protesters are trying to draw attention to government investment in fossil fuels as part of their fifth wave of mass protests on environmental issues.

Demonstrators were seen at the end of the famous bridge in Southwark wearing aprons emblazoned with Tell The Truth and with teapots with Deniabilitea written on them.

Protesters were seen to be removed by the police prior to the blocking of the bridge with a large police presence on the scene of the occupation.

The protests, dubbed the Impossible Rebellion, have been going on since August 23, and have included the fountain outside Buckingham Palace being dyed red, a ‘die-in’ at the Science Museum, and an attempted ‘sleepover’ at McDonald’s.

About 11 Extinction Rebellion protesters glued or locked themselves to the railings inside the Science Museum yesteday.

Five people put their arms through the railings and glued their hands together so they are not damaging the museum’s property, while six deadlocked their necks against the railings.

Some of them were dressed in lab coats, while others were in clothes with Extinction Rebellion logos.
