Step 1: Remove all the doors, shelves, drawers and hardware from the base and wall cabinets. Clean the surface with clean, soft cloth and mineral spirits. You could also use Tri Sodium Phosphate. Remove all the oil stains, grimes, waxes and other stains. Your paint won’t work well on dirty and greasy surfaces.
Step 2: Open up the finished surfaces and even by lightly sanding. If you have any dents or grooves on your cabinet surface, use a good wood filler to fill them up first. After sanding, wipe out the sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step 3: Choose a primer that matches your surface type (metal, laminate or wood). Have the primer dyed to match the color of the top coat, especially for the dark and stained surface. Apply the stain blocking primer designed for glossy surfaces. For tight grain woods like cherry, maple of man-made materials, slow drying, oil based primers work best. And oil based pudding thick coats for ash, mahogany, hickory, oak and other open grained woods. Apply your primer with good quality nylon brush. Don’t forget to caulk the open seams.
Step 4: After your primer dries off completely, start painting your cabinets. Start with your doors, because one side needs to be dry before you start with the other side. Apply at least two coats of paints. Let the first coat thoroughly dry, then lightly sand the painted surface and apply a second coat again. Stir your paint well and pour it into a paint tray before painting.
Step 5: Once your paint completely dries off, put your doors, shelves, drawers back together. Do remember the positioning of each door and shelves. Keep it organized.
