Does the promise of seeing a natural light show igniting up the dark sky intrigue you? If the answer is yes, then the place to visit is the NamibRand Nature Reserve in Namibia. After all, it is one of only three reserves that have been awarded the Dark Sky Reserve gold rating. This means that it is one of the most amazing places to view constellations in the entire world, due to the lack of pollution and urbanization.

But viewing stars is not the only thing that NamibRand Nature Reserve offers its visitors. Covering more than 2000 square kilometers, this reserve is one of the largest privately owned in Africa. It boasts magnificent sand dunes, mountains and a range of wildlife. Before the stars brighten up the dark sky, the setting of the sun is the highlight activity after spending a full day in the wild. This marvelous sunset is not only beautiful but is also incredibly romantic, thus it is best enjoyed with a special someone!

NamibRand Nature Reserve was not only established for tourism purposes; it is also was established to conserve the wildlife and unique ecology of the southwest Namib Desert. The aim of the reserve is to offer ecotourism with minimal impact to the environment. NamibRand is located in the southwest region of Namibia, particularly, to the south of Sesrium, on the border of Namib Naukluft Park. It is usually reached by road, but if you have the means, you can opt for a chartered flight to the reserve on a light aircraft. Some private charter flight companies also organize fly-in safaris that go over the magnificent dunes.

The Namib Desert is the crowning glory of the reserve. While here, you can make use of guides to show you the flora and fauna of the desert, which encompasses not only yellow plains but also vegetated dunes. Full day drives to explore the different sections of the reserve are the most favored activity for visitors. Other fun activities to look forward to while in NamibRand include guided walking safaris and hot air balloon rides.

During your guided walks, watch for fascinating creatures such as giraffe, zebra, oryx, steenbok, hartebeest, baboon, leopard, brown hyena and black-backed jackal. In addition, there are around 170 bird species to look out for. Just don’t get too close to the predators and let the experienced guide lead the way. You can also organize a nice picnic lunch while you’re at it!

The adventure continues when you are back to the campsite at night. While watching the dazzling evening sky, you can also enjoy a bonfire and a lovely dinner provided by your chosen tour guide. Fortunately, there are a couple of accommodation options to choose from while in NamibRand whether you decide to stay for a night or two or more. At present there are four camps and lodges in the area. Some of them are eco-friendly luxury lodges that provide luxury and comfort in a desert wilderness setting. Because the reserve’s priority is environmental preservation, there are only 20 guest-beds in one location, translating to one bed per 1000 hectares. Each lodge will have guides, who can arrange hiking and late afternoon rides.
