Sony Pictures is reportedly forecasting a domestic opening weekend box office of $130-150 million for “Spider-Man: No Way Home”.
That estimate is said to be modest, down from the $190-200 million originally forecast for the film, and takes into account the emergence of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 which could dampen ticket sales a bit.
Even so, ‘No Way Home’ is still predicted to be the first film in the pandemic era to rake in over $100 million domestically in its opening weekend – the previous high point being the $90 million for “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”. Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 3” remains the franchise entry with the biggest opening weekend at $151 million.
The film opens globally this weekend as well with a further $160-180 million estimated from those markets for a global debut tipped to be around the $300 million range.
Review wise the film sits at 94% (7.8/10) on Rotten Tomatoes and a 71/100 on Metacritic. Very few dislike it but for those who do, there’s definitely some variation in scores. As compared to its predecessors, that Metacritic score is on par with the two prior Holland films (73/100 & 69/100 respectively), as is the Rotten Tomatoes average rating (7.7/10, 7.4/10).
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” is scheduled to be released on December 17th.
