Sony Acquires “Halo” Creator Bungie

Bungie

Sony has agreed to acquire Bungie, the video game developer who created the “Halo” and “Destiny” franchises, in a deal valued at $3.6 billion.

Following the acquisition, Bungie will be an independent subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment. The deal comes in the wake of Microsoft’s acquisition of game publisher Activision Blizzard in a $68.7 billion deal.

This much smaller acquisition is something of a symbolic one as Bungie was acquired by Microsoft in 2000, went independent in 2007, signed a ten year deal with Activision in 2010, and was independent again in 2019.

Bungie will reportedly continue to be a multiplatform and independent studio and publisher, with the company making it clear its future games will not become PlayStation exclusives.
