It’s been a couple of years since the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie hit theaters in early 2020, but we all still gotta go fast. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is spin dashing into theaters in just a couple of months, and we couldn’t be any more excited. After all, the first movie was such a blast that we can’t help but yearn for the further adventures of the chili dog-loving hedgehog.
Sonic 2 brings much of the original movie’s cast together, embraces characters from the numerous video game sequels, and–seemingly–goes even bigger and more ridiculous with the action and antics Sonic finds himself in the middle of. In short, it looks a lot like what you’d expect from a follow-up to the first movie.
Given that the next Sonic is heading to theaters relatively soon, we know quite a bit about the film. So let’s take a look at every bit of information that’s been released about Sonic the Hedgehog 2 so far.
What’s the release date?
The next Sonic movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters on April 8. It’ll be the second video game movie of the year, following Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.
Who’s the director?
As with the first film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is directed by Jeff Fowler.
Who’s the writer?
Screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller return to script the new film. This time, they’re joined by Josh Whittington (The Lego Batman Movie, The Lego Ninjago Movie) on screenplay duty.
Who’s coming back?
Chances are all of the characters you loved from the first one are back, even Deputy Whipple (Adam Pally). The returning cast is as follows:
- Ben Schwartz – Sonic (Voice)
- James Marsden – Tom Wachowski
- Jim Carrey – Doctor Ivo Robotnik/Eggman
- Tika Sumpter – Maddie Wachowski
- Lee Majdoub – Agent Stone
- Adam Pally – Deputy Wade Whipple
- Natasha Rothwell – Rachel
Who’s new?
There are really only two major additions to the second film. Firstly, Colleen O’Shaughnessey will lend her voice to two-tailed yellow fox Miles “Tails” Prower, who technically appeared in a post-credits scene from the first movie. This bit of casting is exciting, as this isn’t O’Shaughnessey’s first time voicing Tails. In fact, she’s been playing the character since 2014.
The other major arrival is Knuckles, a hot-headed red echidna who is seemingly one of this movie’s villains, as he teams with Robotnik. Knuckles, who was first introduced in the video game Sonic the Hedgehog 3, will be voiced by Idris Elba (The Suicide Squad).
We also know Shemar Moore (SWAT) will appear in the film in some capacity, though his character has yet to be revealed.
What’s the story?
We only know a bit about Sonic 2, honestly. It has a simple premise of Sonic aiming to prove he’s a true hero to the small town of Green Hills, staying behind while Tom and Maddie go on vacation. Meanwhile, Robotnik returns in search of the Master Emerald, which controls the power of the Chaos Emeralds in the games, and enlists Knuckles to help him. Sonic, meanwhile, teams with Tails.
