FX Content Research has issued a report that estimates that the number of adult scripted original series to be produced in 2021 came in at a total of 559 series across cable, broadcast TV, and streaming.
To give you an idea of how big that is – in 2002 the total stood at just 182 shows. In 2012 it was 288 shows. By 2019 it had reached 532, but fell back down to 493 in 2020 (most likely due to pandemic conditions), and now has surged again.
The rise in the number of streaming services is thought to be a big reason for the upward trend, along with some originally planned 2020 titles being pushed to 2021.
