Sapochnik Talks HBO’s “Dragon” Tone

HBO Max

Out doing promotional rounds for the Tom Hanks-led “Finch,” filmmaker Miguel Sapochnik answered some questions about HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon”.

Sapochnik of course directed some of the most famous episodes of ‘Thrones’ and will serve as co-showrunner with Ryan Condal.

Speaking with THR about how this will compare with ‘Thrones,’ Sapochnik says the aim is to both create something new whilst honoring the old:

“I think we were very respectful of what the original show is. It wasn’t broken so we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. House of the Dragon has its own tone that will evolve and emerge over the course of the show.

But first, it’s very important to pay respects and homage to the original series, which was pretty groundbreaking. We’re standing on the shoulders of that show and we’re only here because of that show.

So the most important thing for us to do is to respect that show as much as possible and try and compliment it rather than reinvent it.”

Sapochnik says he finds show running far more complicated than directing but recognises this will be a long-haul project for him and looks forward to the ‘journey’.

“House of the Dragon” is expected to premiere in 2022 on HBO Max.
