“The Contender,” “The Outpost” and “The Last Castle” director Rod Lurie will direct and produce a currently untitled film about how independent journalist and blogger Clare Rewcastle Brown blew the lid off of the 1MDB scandal.
One of the biggest public corruption scandals in history, billions of dollars was fleeced from Malaysian taxpayers. Brown, an Englishwoman born and raised in Malaysia, engaged in a years-long relentless pursuit of the truth which put her squarely in the crosshairs of powerful global forces.
It’s a story that involves a variety of names including the Gatsby-esque businessman and international fugitive Jho Low, Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak, the Martin Scorsese-directed “The Wolf of Wall Street” movie production, and Goldman Sachs.
Brown’s reporting and that of the several Wall Street Journal reporters would lead to massive changes in Malaysia, including the electoral defeat and criminal conviction of the prime minister.
Scott Conroy has adapted the screenplay from Brown’s book “The Sarawak Report” with Doug Belgrad set to produce for his Sony-based 2.0 Entertainment production label.
