Rita Ora insists you’ve ‘just got to laugh’ amid blackfishing backlash

Rita Ora has insisted that you’ve ‘just got to laugh’ after she was accused of blackfishing.

The Girls singer has been met with claims of cultural appropriation after being called out over some of her pictures on social media.

While she hasn’t explicitly addressed the claims, the 29-year-old took to Instagram to upload a snap of her chuckling away.

‘Sometimes you just gota laugh [sic],’ she captioned the upload – showing her posing in a black bikini – alongside a laughing emoji.

Y’know, in case we didn’t get that laughing memo.

Fans were thrilled with the shot, flooding the comments section with praise.

‘Seeing you smile always makes me happy,’ one penned, while a follower agreed: ‘Omg I love this picture.’

‘Too smoking hot to laugh,’ an Instagram user replied.

As many, many more branded her ‘incredibly beautiful’.

Rita’s upload comes after she made headlines this week – when fans accused her of cultural appropriation in her photos.

A tweet went viral on Monday, which read: ‘Finding out Rita Ora isn’t black at all and both of her parents are white Albanians is so trippy.

‘The girls BEEN blackfishing [sic].’

The post has been shared more than 22,000 times at the time of writing.

Blackfishing is the term used to describe when someone manipulates their appearance to look like a different race and capitalise on this – but is more subtle than overt brown or blackface.

The Fifty Shades Of Grey actress was born in Albania and spent the first year of her life in Kosovo, before her parents fled to England, following the persecution of ethnic Albanians by the regime at the time.

The How We Do star has always been open about her heritage, and has discussed her past at length on social media and in interviews.

She frequently speaks about her background, writing in the Telegraph in 2019: ‘I am a proud Kosovar and an Honorary Ambassador for my country,’ adding ‘Kosovo will always be a part of me.’

However, she has also said in the past that she thinks she’s benefited from the fact that she has a racially ambiguous look.

During an appearance on the Breakfast Club radio show, she told listeners: ‘A lot of people think that [I have black heritage] but I like that.

‘It gets me places.’
