Hi! In this article I will be focusing on oil painting and the two main types of emulsions used in decorating. The two main types of emulsions used in decorating are vinyl emulsion and the exterior emulsion. You can easily buy these from your local department store.
You can use silk vinyl emulsion on walls and ceilings but due to the chemical compound used for this type of emulsion it is advisable not to use it on wood or metal surfaces. Before you apply the silk vinyl emulsion remember to read the paint label first. There are a lot of variations of this kind of paint and you need to be careful to avoid costly mistakes.
Exterior emulsion is a paint emulsion that is usually used outside and on the walls of the house. Due to its chemical composition which consists of highly resistant compounds, it can withstand severe weather conditions and can last much longer compare to other types of paint. Exterior emulsion can be found on any department store.
Now let’s move on to oil paint. Oil paint is a kind of paint you use on wood and metal surfaces. Unlike water based emulsion paints, oil paint is based on (you guessed it) oil so doesn’t stick well on surfaces other than metal and wood. Oil Paint is composed of oil, dye and a binder. Linseed oil is usually used in the production.
Using oil paint to cover metal and wood surfaces is the best way to go but remember that oil paint takes a lot of time to dry. Depending on the weather and type of oil paint used, it may take 2 hours to a day for it to dry. Unlike your usual emulsion paints, you also need Methylated spirits, white spirits or petrol to rub it off.
Before you start painting, you should consider the types of coatings in order to achieve the desired results. In this article I will try my best to give you a step by step guide on how to properly cover a surface using the different kinds of oil paint.
The first step on the list is to cover the area with a “primer”. A primer is used to bind the paint to the wood or metal surfaces. Without a primer the oil paint won’t hold and will rub off with minimal contact. Primer can be bought in your local department store and they come in different kinds like; wood primer, metal primer, aluminum primer and all purpose primer. Just choose the primer that best suited for the surface you are going to paint on.
The next step is optional since most of the time a primer and a gloss finish is enough. But if you want the best results and a cover that will last for years to come then I suggest following this step. An undercoat is a thick and sticky paint that is ideally used for the second coating. An undercoat is a supplementary coat to help the primer and fill out those cracks and holes that you left behind. An undercoat provides a base that the topcoat will stick to and in most cases better than a primer.
There are a lot of top coats on the market but in this article we will only focus on gloss. Gloss is a type of paint used in the finishing or top coat. It gives a shine that no other coats can give. It is normally used in rooms or areas inside the home. Apart from the shine, gloss coat is renowned for its defense against knocks and hard contacts. They give a professional yet vibrant feel and a lot of people like it. Remember like other oil based coats, gloss coat takes a lot of time to dry (usually one day) so you better be careful not to have contact with it until it is fully dry or else you will have a coat that is bumped or uneven.
On my next article I will be focusing on Materials used for preparation and their respective application.
Until then, goodbye.
