There’s a major Sunbeam Crock-Pot recall affecting nearly 1 million units. Specifically, Sunbeam is recalling Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cookers due to a lid issue that could cause burns.
“The recalled Crock-Pot multi-cooker can pressurize when the lid is not fully locked,” according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). “This can cause the lid to suddenly detach while the product is in use, posing burn risks to consumers from hot food and liquids ejected from the product.”
The company itself also “identified that the lids of select 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cookers can detach during use if not used in accordance with the owner’s manual,” it said in a press release. But since the issue was discovered, its says it has updated the instruction manual to avoid “these common misuses,” and it changed the design of the lid that keeps the device from starting unless the lid is properly attached.
The recall was announced on November 24 and applies to Crock-Pots that were manufactured between July 2017 and October 2018, the company’s press release says. That includes about 914,430 units sold in the U.S., in addition to about 28,300 that were sold in Canada. Crock-Pots and other slow cookers can indeed be dangerous, especially if people are using them incorrectly or outside of their intended purpose, SELF reported previously. In the worst-case scenarios, they can cause fires, property damage, and injuries. That’s why it’s always crucial to use your appliances according to the manufacturer’s instructions—and to stop using them if you notice any frayed wires or faulty lids. However, experts say these types of accidents are generally quite rare.
If your Crock-Pot is subject to the recall, you can fill out a request form for a free replacement lid on the company’s site. And in the meantime, definitely avoid using your Crock-Pot—even if that means changing up your Thanksgiving plans.
