“Mortal Kombat” Box-Office: Flawless Victory

It was neck-and-neck on Friday but as Sunday draws to a close, “Mortal Kombat” is set for a flawless victory at the box office – pulling off an impressive $22.5 million for the weekend domestically and $50.1 million worldwide.

That comes in nearly on par with Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1995 previous film adaptation which debuted at $23.5 million domestically (which would actually be around $50 million adjusted for inflation).

Both ‘Kombat’ films scored mixed reviews with the new one coming out a bit higher on critics aggregate sites. The new film was also available on HBO Max from Friday.

“Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train” may have lost the round, but it was no fatality as the anime feature was a very close second with an estimated $19.5 million. It was, by far, the biggest domestic debut of all time for a foreign-language film and had a pretty incredible (for the pandemic era) per-screen average of $12,188.

That’s not all though. “Godzilla vs. Kong” roared past the $400 million mark over the weekend to finish Sunday with a global haul of $406.6 million. It also came in third domestically with a further $4.2 million. “Nobody” and “Raya and the Last Dragon” rounded out the top five.
