Timm Abrams Set Batman Caped Crusader
HBO Max

As part of DC Fandome yesterday, HBO Max briefly teased the high-profile new animated series “Batman: Caped Crusader” though didn’t have any footage or clips to show.

Instead, it was a little talkathon with the three top tier talents involved – filmmakers J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves, along with original 1990s “Batman: The Animated Series” co-developer Bruce Timm.

The project serves as a spiritual successor of the original 1990s “Batman” animated series. In fact, Timm calls it “more Batman: The Animated Series than Batman: The Animated Series” as this time they don’t have the limitations in terms of content and technology they were saddled with on the old show.

In addition, it takes Batman back to the beginning of his career so like the early episodes of “Batman: The Animated Series” it will be “Batman alone” with no other heroes. In fact, Commissioner Gordon won’t be an ally of Batman while his gadgets will be ‘very low-tech’.

The press release claims the series will boast “sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters and intense action sequences” and all in a “visually striking world utilizing state-of-the-art animation”.

That visual look will be heavily inspired by German expressionism and film noir (though in color) and not unlike the 90s series, it will be set in a “kind of timeless ’40s world”.

“Batman: Caped Crusader” will play on both Cartoon Network and HBO Max in 2022.
