Microsoft Withdraws Xbox Gold Price Hike

Less than 24 hours after making the announcement of a planned price hike of its Xbox Live Gold service, Microsoft has backtracked and won’t be doing it.

On Friday the company announced a price hike from $10 to $11 per month. Whilst not a big change, more dramatic was their removal of savings from longer plans. Three-month plans jumped from $25 to $30, and six month plans from $40 to $60.

That’s no longer the case with the company writing in a blog post: “We messed up today, and you were right to let us know. Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming, and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing.”

Attempting to appease its fanbase, Microsoft also revealed that free-to-play games on Xbox would no longer require an Xbox Live Gold subscription for online play.

The news followed in the wake of good news for Xbox earlier this week when comparison tests done on “Hitman III” showed the Xbox Series X version very slightly beating rival PS5 version in terms of image resolution (2160p vs. 1800p) and shadow detail (high vs. medium), though at the cost of a frame rate slowdown on one level.
