Manchester United 4-1 Tottenham Hotspur: Ella Toone scores twice to keep United’s Champions League hopes alive

Manchester United kept their Champions League hopes alive with a comfortable 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the Women’s Super League.

Ella Toone put the Red Devils ahead early on before providing the cross for the returning Christen Press to head home a second inside 20 minutes.

Jess Sigsworth got a third while Toone added a penalty just after the break.

Toone hit the bar with a 70th-minute corner before Spurs’ Alanna Kennedy scored a stoppage time free-kick.

Manchester United stay fourth in the table, level on points with Arsenal but with an inferior goal difference, after the Gunners also won on Sunday.

WSL table as it standsSpurs still need one more point to be certain of avoiding relegation, although should Bristol City fail to win either of their last two games they will be assured of a place in the top flight next season.

USA star Press returned to the United side after injury and influenced the game from the off – she missed a third-minute chance when put through on goal, provided the pass for Kirsty Hanson’s cross for Toone’s opener and then grabbed the second.

Spurs struggled for much of the game and impressive United winger Hanson was again the provider as Sigsworth blasted home their third from six yards after the visitors failed to clear.

Shortly after the restart, Lucy Staniforth was fouled by Kennedy in the area after a through-ball from Toone and the United midfielder sent Rebecca Spencer the wrong way from the spot.

Spencer did well to palm away a long-range effort from Press after an hour and then tip over a powerful Hanson effort seven minutes later as United continued to dominate.

Press just missed the target with 13 minutes left, Leah Galton skewed an effort wide and Spencer made a diving save from Hanson as United threatened to add to their lead before Kennedy’s top-corner effort with the final kick of the game – Spurs’ only effort on target.
