Warner Bros. Animation and New Line Cinema are set to produce a new theatrically released anime feature set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth long before the events of “The Lord of the Rings”.
Titled “The War of the Rohirrim,” the standalone feature is said to focus on one of the most legendary figures in Middle-earth history – Helm Hammerhand, the ninth King of Rohan.
This will expand on the story of the fortress that bears King Hammerhand’s name – Helm’s Deep. Sola Entertainment (“Rick and Morty,” “The God of High School”) is handling the animation and voice casting is underway.
The project has some superb talent behind it too. Kenji Kamiyama, an animator on “Akira” and “Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade” and director of the original anime series “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex,” is helming the film from a script by “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” duo Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews.
In addition, Oscar-winning “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy co-writer Philippa Boyens will return to consult on the project which is being “fast-tracked for the big screen”.
