Leto Hints Third “TRON” May Happen

Disney

One of the earliest examples of the modern ‘legacy sequel’ tentpoles that have become commonplace these days was 2010’s “TRON: Legacy”.

Joseph Kosinski’s follow up to the original 1982 sci-fi adventure, which also spearheaded digital de-aging of a major character, has aged well thanks to its visual style, a superb score by Daft Punk, and its embracing of weird at a studio that has mostly played it very safe in recent years.

With the film making $400 million worldwide off a $170 million budget, it wasn’t enough for Disney to get moving on a planned third feature which stalled and then was cancelled in 2015.

Then in 2020, “Lion” helmer Garth Davis and actor Jared Leto came onboard which revived it. Still, nothing much has been heard about it until this week as Leto tells ScreenRant there’s a good change we can expect movement on it soon:

“I’m a super fan of TRON, and we are working hard on TRON with our incredible partners at Disney. Just an amazing group of creative people. We’re getting closer. We’re getting closer and closer, and who knows? Something may be [coming] sooner than later.”

Kosinski’s film did hint at potential for a sequel with Cillian Murphy’s cameo tipped to be expanded with a bigger role in a possible third entry. However, that talk died down before Leto came onboard.
