Kalings Velma Ditches Scooby Doo

A few months back came word that Mindy Kaling and HBO Max were developing an animated series about the “Scooby-Doo” character Velma Dinkley.

At that time it was said to be an “adult-focused” origin story of the character, and that Kaling would voice the Velma character in addition to executive producing.

Now more details of the series have come to light at the TV Kids Summer Festival where Warners executive Tom Ascheim (President of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics) confirmed that the show is intended for more mature audiences.

The big reveals though came next – the show will apparently re-imagine Velma as a character of East Asian descent, but more importantly “there is no dog and no van” in the series suggesting Scooby-Doo won’t be included as a character.

He does say “we have our four key characters through a different lens” in the show and its very important to the studio to “allow our creators to play with our IP”.

The news comes on top of the report recently that The CW is developing an animated holiday special called “The Scooby-Doo Reunion Special” with plans to release it on TV this year.

“Velma” has no release date at present.
