Joleon Lescott scored his only England goal against France at Euro 2012Former England defender Joleon Lescott said he “didn’t know” he had joined Racing Murcia after the Spanish fourth-tier club had announced his signing.
Lescott, 38, retired in 2017 after a 17-year career which included spells at Wolves, Everton and Manchester City.
Racing said he would play in their Copa del Rey first-round tie against La Liga side Levante on 16 December.
“There’s been an offer for me to go and take part in a game in Spain, which I’m exploring,” said Lescott.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, he added: “By next week I should know whether it’s genuine.”I didn’t know I’d signed – I’d had a conversation. It appears I’m coming out of retirement but I’d be participating in one game – that would be it.”
Lescott also had spells at West Brom, Aston Villa, AEK Athens and Sunderland as a player.
He won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and League Cup after a £22m move to Manchester City in 2009.
Earlier this week, Racing said on social media: “Our president Morris Pagniello and Racing Murcia are happy to announce the signing of English star Joleon Lescott, who will play in our Copa del Rey fixture against Levante.”
In a statement on their website, the club also said:external-link “This first and historic signing allows the Racing Murcia project to be known internationally and to give relevance to a squad practically made up of players from the city of Murcia and the towns of the region.
“In the coming days, the club will announce other star players and professionals who will help the team achieve its goals, both in the league and in the Copa del Rey.”
Lescott, who made more than 600 appearances, won 26 caps for England between 2007 and 2013, scoring his only goal against France at Euro 2012.
Earlier this month, former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o was linkedexternal-link with a move to the club, who are based in the south east of Spain.
Striker Mathias Pogba, brother of Manchester United midfielder Paul, has been with the club since August.
