Jamie Carragher reacts to Liverpool’s deal to sign Thiago Alcantara

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Thiago Alcantara would be a ‘really good addition’ to the club after the Reds agreed a £25m deal with Bayern Munich for the midfielder.

The 29-year-old is set to put pen to paper on a four-year deal at Anfield after the Reds finally agreed a fee with the Germans for the former Barcelona star.

Thiago’s arrival was believed to be dependent on the departure of Gini Wijnadlum, who is a target for Ronald Koeman at Barcelona.

But should WIjnaldum stay, Jurgen Klopp will have a wealth of options in the middle of the park but Carragher believes Thiago can bring something more ‘technical’ to the midfield.

‘Liverpool have got five or six midfield players – they rotate well because they need energy in that position – but a lot of the players are pretty similar,’ said Carragher.

‘Thiago would be something different – less in energy but more technical – and I think he would be a really good addition.

‘Liverpool are world-class at the top end of the pitch, world-class in terms of their defence and goalkeeper; I think they’re top-class in midfield.

‘Something could be added technically and Thiago fits the bill, so fingers crossed he comes.’

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool would allow Wijnaldum to join Barcelona but they value the Dutchman at around £30m.

The midfielder has one year to run on his existing deal at Anfield and the club had been keen to offer him an extension.

However, Klopp remains determined to keep the former Newcastle ace and he started in the 4-3 win against Leeds United on the opening weekend of the season.
