“In the Heights” Targets $20M Opening

The film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musical “In the Heights” is on track to generate around $20 million at the U.S. box office this weekend.

With the movie opening on a Thursday and hitting HBO Max simultaneously, estimates for the four-day Thursday-Sunday haul are wildly varied and currently running between $16-30 million.

Moviegoing in the United State has begun to pick up with Warners leading the charge thanks to “Godzilla vs. Kong,” “Mortal Kombat” and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” all opening well in cinemas despite being also available on its SVOD service.

The Jon M. Chu-directed “Heights” is also being boosted by some stellar reviews with the movie currently sitting on 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Clocking in at a $55 million budget, it doesn’t have to earn that much to be considered a success.

The releases of “F9: The Fast Saga” and “Black Widow” in the next few weeks are also expected to deliver strong numbers.
