Disney’s 1993 Halloween classic “Hocus Pocus” returned to cinemas this weekend, 27 years after its original run, and collected $650,000 on Friday ahead of an expected $1 million in ticket sales over the weekend – putting it ahead of more recent titles like “New Mutants and” “Unhinged”.
The story follows three witches as they are inadvertently resurrected by a young boy in Salem, Massachusetts. “Hocus Pocus” scored just $39 million from a $28 million budget upon its initial release, and pulled in soft reviews.
However in recent years it has become a cult classic and TV event during the month of October. A sequel is currently in the works at Disney+ with Adam Shankman directing from a script by Jen D’Angelo.
“The Empire Strikes Back” is also playing in cinemas and pulled in $95,000 on Friday ahead of a likely $250,000 weekend haul.
