A team of health workers gave Covid vaccines to a group of people stuck in a snowy traffic jam to avoid wasting them.
The group of 20, who work for Josephine County Public Health in Grants Pass, Oregon, got out of their vehicles and approached nearby cars to see if anyone wanted the shots after bad weather brought traffic to a halt on Tuesday.
Six volunteers were quickly found for the leftover shots, which health workers said was on the verge of being spoiled.
Photos posted on Facebook showed the vaccine recipients rolling up their sleeves for a dose of the highly-sought after injections along the snow covered road.
One person given the injection was a local sheriff’s office employee who had been on route to get their vaccine, only to fall foul of the bad weather.
Josephine County Public Health Director Mike Weber joked afterwards that ‘it was one of the coolest operations he’d been part of.’
Covid vaccines are currently limited to the elderly, people with serious underlying conditions, and frontline workers. The injections are expected to become more widely available by spring.
The US has now recorded 25.6million Covid infections, and close to 430,000 deaths.
