STX has beaten out various bidders, including multiple streaming services, for worldwide rights to the Gerard Butler-led action sequel “Greenland: Migration”.
Euro producer-seller Anton took the project to the virtual market at Cannes where significant interest was generated. STX, which distributed the original movie, had a matching option and met it with a deal said to be worth $75 million ($25M domestic, $50M foreign).
The movie will now go out through the studio’s foreign output partners and is being sold on to buyers in other markets.
Butler and co-star Morena Baccarin will return, as will the core filmmaking team including director Ric Roman Waugh helming from a script by Chris Sparling. This time the film boasts an increased budget of over $65 million (up from $40 million for the first film).
The new entry will see the Garrity family, having survived a near-extinction level event when a comet hit the earth, leaving the safety of the Greenland bunker and embarking on a perilous journey across the decimated frozen wasteland of Europe to find a new home.
Filming will take place sometime in the first half of next year with Butler, Basil Iwanyk, Brendon Boyea, Alan Siegel, Sebastien Raybaud and John Zois producing.
