Disney+ has unveiled the first photo of Tom Hanks as Geppetto in Robert Zemeckis’ live-action adaptation of the studio’s 1940 animated classic “Pinocchio” which debuts exclusively on the streamer this September.
The story follows a living puppet who must prove himself worthy in order to become a real boy. Geppetto is his creator, a master toymaker as well as a widower who longs for a son. Geppetto is protective of Pinocchio, prompting the boy to set out and see the world for himself.
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth voices Pinocchio, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Pinocchio’s guide Jiminy Cricket; Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy; Keegan-Michael Key as ‘Honest’ John; Oscar nominee Lorraine Bracco as the new character, Sofia the Seagull; and Luke Evans as The Coachman.
Zemeckis is directing and co-wrote the script with Chris Weitz. The project is separate from the darker, more adult stop-motion animated feature based on the property which Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson are directing for Netflix.
