Emma Raducanu tests positive for Covid and enters self-isolation in Abu Dhabi

Emma Raducanu has tested positive for Covid-19 and withdrawn from the Aubadala World Tennis Championships in Dubai.

The British no1 had been due to play in the competition on Thursday but will now begin a 10 day period of isolation.

‘I was very much looking forward to playing in front of the fans here in Abu Dhabi, but unfortunately after testing positive for Covid-19, I will have to postpone until the next opportunity,’ Raducanu said.

‘I’m isolating as per rules and hopefully will be able to get back on court soon.’

Raducanu had been due to face Olympic champion Belinda Bencic.

A statement from the event organisers said: ‘Emma is now isolating and following all necessary protocols. We wish her a quick recovery and hope to see her back on the court soon.

‘We are looking at alternative top female competitors to go head-to-head with Belinda Bencic. Further updates will be provided in due course.’

Raducanu was set to compete in her first competition with new coach Torben Beltz by her side this week.

Her positive test could disrupt preparations for the Australian Open with the first major of the new season set to get underway on 17 January.

Raducanu’s period of isolation will also ensure she will not be able to attend Sunday’s British Sports Personality of the Year ceremony.

The 19-year-old is among the favourites to scoop the award after her breakthrough year that saw her win the US Open in September.
