EastEnders star Adam Woodyatt has revealed the drawbacks that come with filming with a perspex screen.

It was revealed last week that producers of the BBC One soap devised a series of clever methods in order to ‘cheat’ social distancing.

One of those clever methods involves the use of a perspex screen, which allows for the actors to get closer to one another — especially for scenes which involve kissing.

The screen itself is then reportedly removed in post-production.

While the finished product will no doubt be worth the extra effort — and make for a more enjoyable viewing experience — Ian Beale actor Adam revealed that filming with the screen can have its drawbacks.

He told Radio Times: ‘If rain gets on the Perspex, you can’t shoot through it and you can only wipe it dry with a certain type of cloth.’

‘Until everything gets back to normal, if it ever does, this is the way we have to do things.

‘But it’s honestly taking forever. I could fall asleep between takes.’

Meanwhile, Executive Producer Jon Sen, who — alongside a team of core directors — devised these clever methods, revealed that he didn’t want to bring EastEnders back in a less ambitious form.

He said: ‘We’ve shown that, with ingenuity and ambition, you can achieve far more than you ever thought you could.

‘People like to pick holes in EastEnders when it’s on, but once it goes missing from the schedule, fans feel a sense of vacuum and also that need to see contemporary stories being told on a regular basis.’

EastEnders returns Monday, September 7 at 8:05pm on BBC One.
