Disney+ has handed out a series order to “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” a TV series based on author Rick Riordan’s best-selling novels.
20th Television is producing the Disney Branded Television series which will be far closer to the books than the previous so-so received film adaptations in 2010 and 2013 which aged up the characters.
The series however sees Riordan more closely involved and writing the pilot with Jon Steinberg (“Black Sails”) along with serving as an executive producer.
The story follows a 12-year-old boy who learns that he is a demigod and soon is accused by Zeus of stealing his master lightning bolt. Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus.
James Bobin (“The Mysterious Benedict Society,” “The Muppets”) is directing the first episode. A premiere date for the series hasn’t been set, nor has any casting been announced.
