The Crown, Daniel Kaluuya and Anya Taylor-Joy were among the top winners at the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2021.
The awards ceremony was held virtually on Sunday evening due to the coronavirus pandemic, but it was still just as star-studded as ever.
Chadwick Boseman won another posthumous award, taking outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role for his turn as Levee Green in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
His widow Taylor Simone accepted the award on his behalf and led by giving his parents a shout-out, saying: ‘Thank you, God. Thank you Leroy and Carolyn Boseman.’
She continued: ‘Thank you [playwright] August Wilson. Thank you [director] George C. Wolfe, Denzel [Washington], Todd Black, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Branford Marsalis. Thank you Viola [Davis] and Glynn [Turman] and Michael [Potts] and Colman [Domingo] and Taylour [Paige] and Dusan [Brown] and Jeremy Shamos and Jonathan Coyne.
‘“If you see the world imbalanced, be a crusader that pushes heavily on the seesaw on the mind”. That’s a quote by Chadwick Boseman. Thank you Screen Actors. Thank you, Chad.’
Boseman’s co-star Viola Davis also won outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role for her role as the titular jazz singer – and literally fell off her seat after being announced as the winner.
British actor Kaluuya accepted his award for playing Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah and said: ‘I share this light with all the nominees. Like everyone who was part of making Judas and the Black Messiah, you can’t make a film without an incredible group of people that come together and want to say a truth.
‘I want to share this with LaKeith Stanfield, Dominique Fishback, to Jermaine Fowler and all the incredible day players that show up. And Chairman Fred Hampton for guiding us and showing us his power, even though 52 years later.’
He added: ‘This one’s for Chadwick Boseman and this one is for Chairman Fred Hampton. Thank you so much.’
Gillian Anderson scooped outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Crown.
The actress said in her speech: ‘To Queenie Olivia, you have won every award under the sun, and to Emma, you deserve this along with me for such a mature and accomplished performance.
‘And to the entire Crown ensemble, who in my eyes does not get enough attention for all the depth that you bring to every episode.’
She then went on to thank her former partner Peter Morgan who created the series, and said: ‘And last, but never least, Peter Morgan for creating so many multidimensional roles for all us actors to sink our teeth into and win awards for. Thank you, thank you, thank you.’
The Crown also took outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series.
Anya Taylor-Joy triumphed in the outstanding performance by a female actor in a television movie or limited series for The Queen’s Gambit.
Acknowledging her fellow nominees, Anya began: ‘Thank you so much, but first of all just thank you for your performances.
‘I’m so unbelievably honored to be in this room, even though it’s not a room, it’s still mental. It was such a privilege to get to work with the playmates I got to work with. They were so beautiful and supportive and kind.’
She added: ‘A show isn’t made by one person, it’s made by everybody, and I’m just so, so grateful that I get to do this.’
It was a big night for sitcom Schitt’s Creek, which won outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series while Catherine O’Hara scooped outstanding performance by a female actor in a comedy series.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 took home the outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture with lead star Sacha Baron Cohen doing the honours of accepting.
The Sag Awards did not have a host this year and instead featured pre-recorded speeches and segments from the stars.
