Lee Cattermole has left Sunderland after a decade with the club. The midfielder, 31, returned to his native north-east from Wigan in 2009 and has since made 261 appearances in all competitions. Seven of his 10 Sunderland goals came in League One last season, while he has racked up 90 yellow and seven red cards for the club. Cattermole told the club website: “Sunderland is a special club and this decision has not been easy, but I believe it is the right time to find a new challenge. “The football club, over my 10 years, has had some fantastic managers, staff and players and I have been lucky to be part of that. “I would like to say a big thank you to Jack Ross and his staff, and I wish him and the current squad all the best for the coming season. “There are some exciting young players at the club and I will be looking forward to seeing them progress. “And finally, and most importantly, the fans. You are what makes the club special and your passion and commitment is something that has always inspired me throughout my career at Sunderland and will continue to inspire the team. Thank you.” The club added: “Lee has been a great servant for SAFC and we wish to place on record our thanks for his dedication for the past 10 years and we wish him the very best in the future.” Topics Lee Cattermole, League 1, Sunderland Yedlin: Cattermole leading Sunderland survival bid Cattermole prognosis pleases boss Poyet Cattermole: Allardyce can lead Sunderland to success Cattermole crucial to Sunderland relegation fight – Allardyce We are so close, now go out and deliver – Neville issues England rallying cry Mounie confident Benin can topple Cameroon and reach knockout stages Mane makes up for early spot-kick miss with two goals as Senegal sink Kenya Algeria maintain perfect start to Africa Cup of Nations by beating Tanzania Liverpool midfielder Allan extends loan deal at Fluminense Manchester United move step closer to signing midfield star This striker could be leading the line for Chelsea next season in shock development Manchester United dealt blow as midfield target agrees terms with another club Quiz!
