This weekend’s only new wide release, the acclaimed R-rated revival of “Candyman,” is beating expectations with the film on track to earn slightly over $20 million domestically in its opening weekend.
Taking $11 million on Friday (with Thursday night previews included), the film was shot on a budget of just $25 million and so should be into profit fairly quickly.
Despite the critically positive reviews, the film managed only a B CinemaScore. Nia DaCosta helms the feature which serves as a spiritual sequel to the 1992 original.
“Free Guy” is expected to slip to second with the movie pulling in $3.5 million on Friday while “PAW Patrol” will come in third with $1.7 million.
