Britain’s Got Talent’s Steve Royle will include coronavirus jokes in semi-final: ‘I can’t be a comedian and not reference what we’ve been through’

Britain’s Got Talent comedian Steve Royle will make jokes about coronavirus in his act for the semi-finals.

During his first audition, the funnyman had the judges in stitches as he juggled a set of guitars while juggling ping pong balls from his mouth.

And while BGT fans have been eagerly waiting for the semi-finals to air, the 51-year-old has had months to perfect his act.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk about what he has in store, Steve explained that he had to reference the coronavirus pandemic during his performance.

‘I want to reference the situation we’re in. I can’t be a comedian and not reference what we’ve been through in the last six months,’ he said.

‘There’s a couple of nods to that in my act as well and I don’t want to give too much away, but I wanted to acknowledge it and not to totally ignore what’s been going on for the past few months and to see a lighter side of it for once.’

Speaking about how he had to adapt his act for the semi-finals in order to adhere to social-distancing guidelines, the comedian from Lancashire continued: ‘I had several ideas for the semi-finals, and they got eliminated as the lockdown went on because they were involving in the judges.

‘I had ideas of getting them on stage and I realised you can’t do certain things because of social-distancing so it made interactions a lot harder.’

And despite not wanting to give too much away, Steve has promised viewers a ‘big finish’.

‘But it will be harder to get a standing ovation because the audience will be watching on the screens at home,’ he said.

During the semi-finals, comedian Steve will also be joined by the golden buzzer acts including singer Fayth Ifil.

Mother and daughter singing duo Honey and Sammy got Amanda Holden’s golden buzzer, while comedy musician Jon Courtenay earned Ant and Dec’s.

Comedian Nabil Abdulrashid was buzzed through to the semi-finals by Alesha Dixon, with choir Sign Along With Us earning David Walliam’s golden buzzer.

Britain’s Got Talent airs on Saturday at 8pm on ITV
