Brighton set to challenge Leeds United for Man Utd star

Brighton could join Leeds United in the race to sign Man Utd winger Daniel James, according to reports.

The Welshman first made his name for Swansea City during the 2018/19 Championship season.

James was a mainstay for the Welsh side that season, making 33 league appearances. He scored four goals and provided seven assists as he shone for the Swans all season.

In January 2019, he looked set to move to Leeds United. On deadline day he agreed on terms and completed his medical, only for Swansea to pull the plug on the deal at the last minute.

He completed the season with Swansea, before joining Manchester United last summer. A deal worth around £15m was agreed between the clubs, with James signing a five-year-deal with United.

The 22-year-old started the season strongly, but he soon fell down the pecking order. He finished the season with three goals and six assists in the Premier League from 33 outings.

With James looking out of favour, this has sparked talk again of a potential move to Leeds United. Daily Star Sport have reported that Leeds will make a move for James if they are willing to let him leave.

But now, The Athletic have reported that Brighton boss Graham Potter would ‘relish’ linking up with James.

Former Swansea boss Potter gave James his first break in senior football, inserting him into the Swans side in 2018.

The duo clearly have a great relationship, so a move to Brighton may appeal to James. Though Potter believes James will remain at United, at least for now, to try to fight for his place in the team.

First-team chances are hard to come by for James at the moment. Despite this, Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has still been full of praise for the youngster:

”He is probably the best defensive winger in the world with his honesty, commitment and the way he does his recovery runs and doing his back tackles.”
