John Singleton, the director behind Boyz N the Hood and Higher Learning, suffered a stroke on Wednesday and is currently in the ICU “under great medical care,” the family confirmed of the 51-year-old on Saturday.
“On Wednesday, April 17th our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital,” the full statement, given to EW from Singleton’s publicist, reads. “John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care. We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues.”
Singleton, whose credits also include helming 2 Fast 2 Furious and Shaft, currently serves as co-creator and executive producer on FX’s Snowfall, which the network renewed for a third season in September.
Since the news of Singleton’s condition broke, well-wishes poured out from Hollywood, including from actress Viola Davis, director Guillermo del Toro, and Pose creator Steven Canals.
